Sustainable Fabric Creation
Recycled yarn is made from post-consumer or post-industrial materials, such as old textiles, plastic bottles, or fabric scraps. Here are some key points about recycled yarn:
- Sustainability: Using recycled yarn reduces waste and minimizes the need for virgin materials, making it an eco-friendly choice.
- Variety: Available in various fibers, including cotton, wool, and acrylic, recycled yarn can be found in different weights and textures.
- Production Process: The recycling process typically involves collecting used materials, cleaning them, and then spinning them into new yarn.
- Quality: Many recycled yarns are of high quality and can be as durable and versatile as their non-recycled counterparts.
- Projects: Ideal for a wide range of projects, from knitting and crocheting to weaving, recycled yarn can add a unique character to your creations.
- Supporting Circular Economy: Choosing recycled yarn supports a circular economy by giving materials a new life and reducing landfill waste.
When shopping for recycled yarn, look for brands that provide transparency about their sourcing and production processes to ensure sustainability.
Environmental Friendly Packaging
Biodegradable resealable bags are a great eco-friendly alternative to traditional plastic bags. They are designed to break down more quickly in the environment, reducing plastic pollution. Here are some key features and benefits:
- Material: Often made from plant-based materials like cornstarch, these bags are designed to decompose under the right conditions.
- Resealable: Many come with a zipper or adhesive closure, making them convenient for storing /packaging items while still being environmentally friendly.
- Composting: Depending on the specific product, some biodegradable bags can be composted, contributing to soil health.
- Sustainability: Using these bags helps reduce reliance on single-use plastics, supporting more sustainable practices.
Turning Plastic Waste into stylish garments
Sustainable Fabric Creation
The blending of natural fibres with recycled materials
Innovative approaches in textile production are revolutionising sustainability efforts by blending natural fibres like cotton with recycled materials such as polyester derived from plastic bottles. This unique blend not only reduces waste but also minimises environmental impact, showcasing the textile industry’s commitment to sustainability.
The Process Of Creating Recycled Polycotton Fabric
- Collection of Plastic Bottles: PET bottles are collected by informal waste collectors as well as formal recycling businesses across the country.
- Cleaning and Preparation: Collected bottles undergo thorough cleaning, removal of labels and caps, and are then crushed into small flakes.
- Transformation into Polyester Fiber: Clean PET flakes are melted and extruded to form fibres by passing the molten plastic through tiny holes, resulting in thin strands that are stretched and cooled to create polyester fibres.
- Blending with Cotton: The recycled polyester fibres are blended with cotton fibres in precise ratios (e.g., 65% polyester and 35% cotton) and spun together to create a versatile yarn combining the best of both materials.
- Fabric Production: The blended yarn is woven or knitted into fabric based on the desired texture and application.
“Sustainability isn’t a trend, it’s a responsibility.
Choose fabrics that honour our planet and its resources.”
Sustainability And Environmental Impact
The utilisation of recycled polyester significantly reduces the environmental impact compared to virgin polyester. Approximately eight plastic bottles are used for every garment produced. Moreover, it requires less energy for production than virgin polyester. Blending recycled polyester with cotton combines the durability and moisture-wicking properties of polyester with the comfort and breathability of cotton, offering a sustainable and high-performance material option.
The creation of fabrics from recycled polyester and cotton signifies a promising stride in sustainable textile production, harnessing the advantages of recycling and the desirable attributes of natural fibres. Continuous advancements in recycling technologies and sustainable farming practices are pivotal in maximising the environmental benefits of such materials.
Sourcing Of Plastic Bottles
Plastic bottles utilised in this recycling process are primarily sourced from consumer waste, with developed countries boasting established recycling programs being major contributors. Countries like the United States, European Union nations, and Japan have robust collection and recycling systems in place.
Efforts to collect and recycled plastic bottles are further bolstered by NGOs, governmental initiatives, and private enterprises dedicated to curbing plastic pollution. This global supply chain for recycled plastics plays a pivotal role in the circular economy, promoting material reuse and recycling to minimise waste and resource depletion.
Benefits Of Using Recycled Fabric
- Reduces use of non-renewable resources such as oil / fossil fuels by using recycled content (rPET / recycled PET bottles).
- Reduces carbon emissions, water & energy usage and has significantly less environmental impact than virgin fibre.
- International standards and best practices are applied in all operations ensuring quality, environmental, social compliance and responsibility.
- The entire process from raw material (PET bottles) to fabric is 100% local ensuring support of the South African economy, the local textile industry, the circular economy and recycling economy.
- All the rPET SJ also includes BeSoCOOL and BeSoSOFT as a standard, which promotes a soft hand feel for comfort and breathability to keep the wearer cool. These products are all environmentally friendly and C2C certified.
